Installfest

NOTE Please back up all your very important files. Always good to do before an update but especially good for installfest.

CSESoc will be holding an installfest on Saturday, 1 August, 2009.

Installfest is for people who want to install Linux, are having trouble installing Linux, or any general issue about Linux on their computer. You can often get most questions answered on the CSE forums.

It will be in the Bugle lab. We'll be starting at 10am, and be there until around 4pm (depends on how much help people need). Bring your computer (laptop or desktop; we should be allowed to use the lab's monitors.)

If you know Linux and can help out, please show up on the day (and if you're interested in joining the Tech working group, email me.) We expect to be able to provide free pizza for all Arc members and volunteers. (Others can purchase pizza for about $5.)

We hope to be able to offer support for the following to our attendees: Some of these can be found on our mirror (must be on campus to download), so please try them out before installfest.

Please refer to this page for up date event information, including cancellations.

Contact csesoc.tech.head@cse with any questions.

Volunteers info:

Free pizza!

I'd like to see us not force linux onto everyone, but rather tailor to their needs. For most of the first years, I think the CSE ubuntu VM is what they want, otherwise, they can install regular ubuntu and put the csesoc packages on top. For computers that can't handle ubuntu, cygwin or xcode should be fine. I've included a short list above, and volunteers should start familiarizing themselves with one or more of the items on the list (I'm looking at cygwin, cseubuntu, ubuntu, and debian.)

Every session, we have network troubles at installfest, so we need people to also start looking at using CSE's mirror, making CDs, and learning how to go through cse's proxy during an install. If you've got a CD at home, bring it.

Installfest has been advertised to COMP1911 students, and probably COMP1917 students as well, so we may have a lot of attendees (find more volunteers).
