Over the past few years, CSE has seen a surge in recruitment from tech companies big and small. Thanks to past students there is a wealth of information available about life as a software engineer. Unfortunately, most students are still unaware of what opportunities are available if they were to chose a career in computer science research.
In this talk I'll be comparing the difference between the life of a PhD student and a software engineer. I'll also cover what kind of research opportunities are available to students at UNSW. Finally, I'll share my experience applying to schools in the US (Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, CMU, UW) and the UK (Cambridge) along with some useful advice to help anyone considering doing the same.
